SEVEN STEPS TO CHOOSING A CONSULTANT

Recent survey results that came my way on the Internet from the Alliance for Nonprofit Management determined that 80 percent of the nonprofits that used a consultant in the recent past were satisfied with the results.  This column is to help you engage in a process that has the best chance of resulting in a good outcome for your agency when using a consultant.

In the nonprofit world of 2004 with more than 900,000  501(C)(3)s in the United States, there is extreme competition among organizations to stay alive and to thrive. More than ever before, organizations have to work smart and be forward looking. Planning must be strategic and include high standards and goals for staff and the board. Today corporate, foundation and savvy individual donors are asking the hard question: How do I know you are making a difference for the population you serve? Donors want to be part of healthy, successful and sustainable nonprofits.
