Leading the Charge: Energizing Nonprofit Excellence

Wednesday, November 7, 2007

Crowne Plaza Hotel, Cromwell, Connecticut

Morning Seminar          (10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.)
A.    Extra! Extra! ...  Coverage Please (Media Panel)

Nonprofit executives and professionals have been clamoring for more media coverage of the nonprofit sector, beyond scandals, investigative reports and the feel-good fluff.  They want reporters, editors and newscasters to cover nonprofits with the same energy and effort afforded the business and government sectors of society.  But is there more to the story?

We have assembled a media panel consisting of an editor-in-chief, Capitol Bureau reporter, features writer and journalism professor to help get a better understanding of the complex and ever-changing media industry.  Moderated by a communications consultant, the media panel will discuss the work they do, how their specific news organizations function, and the trends, opportunities and challenges they face in the news industry.

Before nonprofits challenge the news media to understand and increase their coverage of the nonprofit sector, nonprofit professionals must seek out the news behind the news.

Panelists:
Susan Campbell, features writer, Hartford Courant
Jerry Dunklee, professor of journalism at Southern Connecticut State University and board member of the Connecticut Chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists
Keith Phaneuf, capitol reporter, Journal Inquirer
Jim Smith, editor in chief, Connecticut Post
Moderator—Anita Ford Saunders, owner of Anita Ford Saunders Communication
