SEVEN
STEPS TO CHOOSING A CONSULTANT
Recent survey results that came my way on the
Internet from the Alliance for Nonprofit Management determined that 80
percent of the nonprofits that used a consultant in the recent past were
satisfied with the results. This column is to help you engage in a
process that has the best chance of resulting in a good outcome for your
agency when using a consultant.
In the nonprofit world of 2004 with more than
900,000 501(C)(3)s in the United States,
there is extreme competition among organizations to stay alive and to
thrive. More than ever before, organizations have to work smart and be
forward looking. Planning must be strategic and include high standards and
goals for staff and the board. Today corporate, foundation and savvy
individual donors are asking the hard question: How do I know you are
making a difference for the population you serve? Donors want to be part
of healthy, successful and sustainable nonprofits.
